Rail Planning

The constant changes and progress in railway operations demand powerful, integrated planning and simulation tools. Trapeze’s suite of planning and management tools assists train operators in building timetables and testing their robustness, simulating railway operations, and planning vehicle and crew utilisation. This helps deliver effective railway operations - from strategic long-term planning to implementation of these plans in daily operation.

Rail - Simulation and Modelling

Simulation of infrastructure and power supply, timetables and train operations

Simulations enable rail experts and engineers to predict the behaviour of rolling stock, signalling systems and power supply networks as well as complete train movements

Our Timetable Robustness Analyser (TTRA) is a simulation tool that uses timetable-planning rules to predict train delays and identify avoidable weak spots in any timetable, e.g. when minor disruptions such as traction performance problems or temporary speed restrictions occur.

Trapeze's RailPlan and PowerPlan tools offer users the ability to simulate the operational capabilities of planned or existing railway infrastructure to a high level of detail using basic physical principles. Our integrated suite, RailPlan and PowerPlan, has an iterative feedback loop that takes the interaction between the electrical power system and the vehicle's traction characteristics into account, and models the effect each has on the other.

PowerPlan simulates and calculates the energy demands that will be made on a railway's power supply network. PowerPlan's ability to model regenerative braking and energy storage devices is an added advantage to anyone seeking to use energy more efficiently.

Rail - Timetable

Reliable, efficient and conflict-free timetables

TrainPlan provides complete support to the railway operations planning process. With the fully scalable timetable-planning tool, TrainPlan, you can develop the train service schedules that underlie the timetable quickly and easily. In this way you can – in a very short time – develop and compare many different timetable scenarios. The tool uses defined calendars, sectional running times, and rolling stock characteristics to validate the timetable, and check for conflicts with other services or with track possessions and blockages. This means that you can easily plan and develop realistic timetables.

Negotiating track access

Optimal utilisation of the rail network becomes more and more crucial as the demand for rail transport increases. With AccessPlan you can identify new or unused train paths, and submit, process and manage applications for train services via the internet. This enables an infrastructure owner's customers to interact directly with the system to submit requests for train services either as outline path applications or as fully timed paths.  It also allows the user to check the status of those requests, and to view the proposed modified timetables.  In addition, it allows customers to separately record commercial information and for this information to be merged with the final path offers as appropriate.

Rail - Crew and Vehicle Planning

Scheduling resources to deliver a timetable

ResourcePlan (part of Trapeze Rail System) creates crew and vehicle schedules using the timetable data generated in the timetable-planning tool TrainPlan and validates resource schedules against planning rules and restrictions. The highly visual and user-friendly system allows users to visualise, develop, understand and communicate resource plans effectively and efficiently.

Successful delivery of train services is limited by two factors: the mobile resources (rolling stock, train crews) and track capacity. ResourcePlan offers the ability to undertake integrated planning of trains and resources, and can be used to create a resource-driven or timetable-driven plan.
