Media Release: Trapeze prepared to meet the challenges of the future

Neuhausen am Rheinfall, 10 January 2019 – Trapeze, a provider of operations control technology for public urban transport organisations with European headquarters in Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland, is adapting to the changes in market conditions and streamlining its structures. This reorientation requires a downsizing of staff levels at all its locations worldwide, including its headquarters in Neuhausen. Switzerland continues to serve as the European headquarters of Trapeze and is also key to the development and production of its systems. In view of its technologically advanced and high-quality products and solutions and its customer proximity, the company’s assessment of its market potential continues to be positive.

As a result of the marked restraints existing in the international markets and due to a lack of invitations to tender for new projects, a capacity adjustment has been found to be inevitable. Moreover, the company faces stiffer competition, perceptibly squeezing profit margins. At the same time, Trapeze has identified new and higher technological requirements of public transport operators. Trapeze can only meet these challenges by resorting to new competences from outside. This reorientation is to ensure the organisation’s sustained competitiveness and to position it for the future in the best possible manner.

Peter Schneck, CEO of Trapeze Europe, says: “We need to adapt to changing market conditions. The company management has carefully analysed the current situation and developed an action plan designed to adjust cost structures and increase efficiency. The actions taken now are believed to ensure the company’s future on a sustainable basis.”

Effects on staffing levels

The planned structural measures are to produce a leaner and more focussed organisation with an even stronger customer orientation than has been the case up to now. In mid-2018, Trapeze ITS Central Europe had some 480 employees worldwide.

By the spring of 2019, jobs are to be eliminated or not be replaced at all locations. This also includes 15 jobs in Neuhausen, which are to be terminated in the course of the year. The necessary measures are to be taken in the most socially acceptable way possible: Existing possibilities of early retirement are to be utilised, and consideration is also to be given to natural staff turnover. The employees affected at the company’s location in Neuhausen have been personally informed over the past few days. Apprentices are not affected by this measure.

Good market potential

Despite the challenges mentioned, the management believes that the company’s market potential is consistently positive. Its public urban transport systems and components are among the technological leaders in their field. In addition, its tight international customer relations ensure a close proximity to the markets. In conjunction with the products of the entire Trapeze Group, the company has a broad portfolio and a strong market position and is a leading global provider in the rapidly growing public mobility environment.
With a view to the future, Trapeze is focussing intensely on the challenges of the Smart City. Among other things, this comprises new interfaces, vehicle electrification, increasing digitalisation and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS).

The Trapeze portfolio is already oriented towards these topics, and many of its customers opt also for these innovations of the company besides its tried-and-tested Trapeze products. The company is proving its standing as an innovative technology provider to the transit industry through its autonomous mobility projects that are in progress in several European cities, for example its “Route 12” solution for the public transport authority of Schaffhausen.
